The Problem
According to the National Safety Council (NSC):
- As many as 40,000 people died in the U.S. in motor vehicles crashes in 2016.This number represents a:
– 6% rise from 2015
– 14% increase in fatalities since 2014- 5,376 pedestrians and 818 bicyclists died in crashes with motor vehicles in 2015. This number represents:
– 17.7% of the total U.S. crash fatalities during that year - Additionally,

The Solution
New Device/Technology: Demand-Responsive Transverse Rumble Strips (DRTRS)
– A box frame that houses an array of rectangular actuated plates and a rumble assembly mechanism.
– The plates are spaced at regular distances from each other and are transverse to the flow of vehicular traffic.
– When the rumble plates are raised, the wearing plate together with the rumble plates provide a flat rolling surface flush with the level of the roadway.
– When the rumble plates are lowered, transverse rumble strips are formed.
